The recipe starts with a gallon of water and only makes 4-6 servings? That's one heck of a hungry group of 4-6 people you're serving. You could probably divide everything by 4 (that's why you married a former math major) and still feed 8-10 Lowe children.
But you're supposed to let it simmer until it reduces by at least 50%.
Even with the reduction, I'd say that it would still feed infinitely many Lowe children, as I am sure that none of them would eat a bite! Nothing against the soup, just my picky kids.
